Civic Anzac Service 25/04/2015
On Saturday 25th April the Anzac Civil Service was held at the upper domain. Approximately 1/4 of the school assembled, with their parents, at the Knox Church ready to march to the Cenotaph. Students represented Saint John, The Navy and Ruahine School.
Mr and Mrs Reid dressed as medics from WW1 and brought their donkey to represent a stretcher-bearer with the New Zealand Medical Corps, Richard Alexander Henderson, who used donkeys when transporting wounded soldiers.
Following the service Scout and Shakira took photographs of the 'Field of Remembrance' and our wreath as it lay at the foot of the Cenotaph. Thank you to parents and children who attended.

Mixed Media Artwork
WALA Pounamu

As Ruahine ROCKERS our learning is polished and refined until we
are valued citizens both at school and in the community. The different shapes
represent different strengths and values.

This art
work is mixed media. It represents our team ‘Pounamu.’
Pounamu is a precious greenstone that is valued by Māori. When it is polished and shaped it
is a beautiful ornament and tool.
Koru: growth and new beginnings.
Hei Matau (fish hook): strength, protection and catching good
luck.
Toki (adze): strength, control, determination.

Materials: wool, laminating pouches, crayon, pastel, dried grass, shells.

WALT follow instructions
Congratulations to the events team who organised a sports afternoon based around the cricket skills of striking the ball, fielding and collaboration. Rooms 1,2 and 8 had a terrific afternoon running an obstacle course, playing diamond cricket and t-ball.
Hit the wickets.
Bat and ball control.
Fun!
Grab a bat, take turns and....RUN!!!
Changeover, this is actually very well organised.
Hit and run.
Definitely hit that for a four!
...and that for a six. We all had to use our ROCKERS values to succeed, to have fun and to make sure everyone got to participate. Tino pai.

Positive Image Printing
W.A.L. to screen print.
Room 8 rocks!!! Today we did our final screen printing with fabric ink on 100% cotton material. The cotton is more absorbent than other materials. This was an even more difficult task than yesterday because we had to cut the inside of our image out and leave the outside intact. Once again Mrs Berkahn guided us through the steps and our helpers helped. We had to put paper inside our shirt to stop ink leaching through to the other side and then carefully place our template on, just like a stencil. The finished results left us gasping with awe and gave us all a terrific sense of accomplishment. Thanks also to Mrs Barrow who came in and ironed the shirts to heat-set the ink.

One of the hot topics for discussion is going to be copyright, intellectual property and creative commons. Please pop in and see our screen printing or make a comment below. :)

Screen Printing in Deltora Quest!
W.A.L. how to screen print.
Room 8 students were lucky to have visiting teacher Mrs Beth Berkahn in class on Monday and Tuesday. Our ultimate goal was to make screen printed t-shirts, tea towels and pillowslips, however, on the way, we discovered there were a plethora of learning experiences to be had. The photographs show the learning journey from ideas, sketching, planning, cutting, more cutting and still more cutting! ROCKERS values were crucial to our success and the results are stunning. See below for the 'negative image' paper prints. Thank you to Georgia, Kerry and Terri who were our helpers.
Our first set of prints were designed to represent New Zealand. Students identified koru and pounamu patterns, silver ferns, kiwis, jandals, maps and flags as Kiwiana symbols. Tino pai e rawa Deltora Quest, Mrs Gibbs is proud of you all :)
