Week 8 in the Rock Stars

Week 8

In the Rock Stars this week we did basic facts and our parents could come along and see what we do in math time. We all had fun. We played lots of games with our parents.
Here are some of the things we said afterwards:

“It was real cool, I love it because it was fun to challenge games that we could beat them at.”
“Fun, instead of just few games we did lots.”
“I liked beating my parents.”
“It was fun when Aunty beat Richard and me.”
“It was good practise for inter-school maths.”
“It was good to challenge yourself, because you get better.”
"My aunty thought it was nice to be part of my math learning."
Mum said "I liked the squares and primes game."

DSC00854.JPGWe have being learning about 3D shapes.
3D shapes have length, width and depth.

On Thursday night there was a math competition at the St Joseph's hall. Natasha, Anne and Amie were in a team. They got first out of the year seven and eights. Lachlan, Hudson and Hughin got third out of the year seven and eights. Thomas, William and Tamati got fourth out of the year Sophie and Aanalise got sixth out of the year five and sixes.

Week 7 in the Rock Stars

In the Rock Stars this week we have done some reading. We have been thinking why the author has decided to write this book. We have read some books, we think they wrote them because they want to entertain us. Now we have to work out what the author’s message is.  For example, in The Sneetches “even if you’re different, you are not any better or worse than anyone else”.

For math this week in the Rock Stars we have been learning about area. We have found that the difference between area and perimeter is that the area is the inside and the perimeter is the outside edges. When you increase the perimeter by a scale factor of 2, it doubles, but the area will multiply by 4.

This week in the Rock Stars we have traced around a template plate. Then we made some patterns on a cubes. Here are some photos of the first face of our cube.DSC00819.JPG

On Thursday we went to the QE2 .Kate, the garden teacher wasn’t there so we spent some time noticing the sounds and what we could feel and see. We saw a Tui, after we noticed it's song. Here is some writing about how we felt.

"I could feel the wind rushing by my face like a speedy racing car. I could also feel the hot sun beaming down onto me like a blanket wrapping me up.I could hear birds chirping high up in the trees singing the song of nature. I could also hear the wind swirling and wooshing through the trees.I could see tall trees and other plants of nature. I could also see the blue sky and the big tall pool building. All of these scenes could feel nature, see nature and hear nature." By Stephen Charmley.

In Math we have been learning about area. What it means and how to calculate it. Ella, Mia and Paige made a video to show you how.

Week 10 in the Rock Stars

On Wednesday it was 7 aside tournament and most of the schools from the area went. Year 5-6 and year 7-8 went to the 7 aside.  It was an awesome day, the teachers heard lots of reports of fair ,fun play and ROCKERS values being shown.  Oh, and we won the Year 7-8 soccer trophy!

In math this week we have been learning our to create art using transformations of shapes. . We could use rotations (turns), reflections (mirror), translations (shifts) and enlargements. Here is one of our pictures.

On Thursday Room 2 went for a walk in the QE2 because Mrs Frost (our teacher) had never been in the QE2.  Some paths were overgrown and we got lost. We couldn’t find the particular part of the creek. Here are some photos that we took while we were in the QE2.

This week we have also been learning about descriptive writing and we did some monster writing. We will be sharing it with Parklands School, they will try to draw it. The people with the most similar monsters win. Parklands School might also be sharing some monsters with us that we will have to draw. Here are some photo’s of some monsters.
My MONSTER writing
My monsters name is Cloudy. He has a ginormous blue circle head that is far too heavy for his small blue cloud like body. He has short blue arms and blue clouds for his hands and the same with his legs. He has 2 ears like a big old grizzly bear with 2 upsidedown raindrops inside them the colours for the raindrops are red green and orange. He has 2 green and yellow stripey snakes on either side of his head one pointing up and the other on pointing down He has 2 bulging eyes like Spongebob Squarepants with 3 eyelashes on each one. His eyes are about the size of a ping pong ball. My monster has 2 antennas with eyes on top. The eyes are like the other eyes, he has purple pupils. On each antenna he has purple sharp spikes, stuck to the antenna. He has orange polka dots all over his body.
And that is my MONSTER!!!

By Mia :)

We have also been working on our poppy art.  We have learnt how to draw a poppy and have recreated it 4 times using different mediums.  This week we are using collage.

Week 8 Rock Stars

In the Rock Stars this week we have learnt about scale drawings. We have a video for an example.

We have drawn some Poppies to remember the Soldiers that went to war.The Poppies took a few steps to finish. The charcoal we used was fragile and we smudge the charcoal at the end. Here are some photos.

Cross country day was on Monday 8 June. The little kids were fast but the older kids were faster (maybe because they have longer legs).

In class we had to zoom in on one thing about cross country. Here are some photos of our published writing.

It's a sad day for Room 2.One of our best members Michael has left the Rock Stars. We're all sad that Michael has left. We had brownies to cheer him up. We will all miss him. Here is a photo of him and the brownie

Week 7 in the Rock Stars

In the Rock Stars we have been doing equations using tidy number strategies.

We have also been learning how to  describe a person but without telling them but showing the reader.

"As he sprints across the field his lean muscles ripple in his long legs moving backand forward, back and forward, faster and faster. As he is sprinting he is talking jokes and laughting with his friends. As he runs he his legs bob up and down, up and down".
This person is my best friend, can you guess who he is? By Samuel

"As she strode through the door her high heeled boots making a clatering noise behind her, a loving smile spread over her freckled face, while a glamorous necklace hung around her neck. Her dark short red hair was wind blown. An interesting book laid in her kind hands. Glasses sat on her smooth skin. Her tall body spread with goregous clothes. Her helpful brain spread with great ideas". Guess who? By Caley

The Rock Stars also have done a step by step bulldog drawing instructions and they finally made a bulldog.   Click here to have a go yourself!

The Dahl’s have read a Chunky Chalk book and have made an artwork made with chalk and pastel. Here are some pictures of our work.
